Pain Management/Physical Therapy
The goal of pain manangement physical therapy will be to optimize and restore the patient's functional capacity by minimizing muscle spasms, strengthening affected muscles, improving patient's range of motion and genral conditioning. Additionally, physical therapy will work towards correcting postural and gait imbalances which contribute to the persistencce of the pain syndrome. Since the pain problem is often chronic, long term goals will be directed at teaching the patient a home exercise program and flare-up management techniques thus allowing the patient
to develop tools toward self-management of their pain syndrome.
As opposed to traditional physical therapy, which only focuses on the area of injury, pain management, physical therapy focuses on the whole body. Chronic pain often causes patients to have compensatory movements leading to pain in multiple other areas. This is how pain management physical therapy differs from traditional PT. The use of passive modalities are avoided. The therapy is directed at functional recovery requiring active participation of the patient. Unfortuately, pain management PT is billed using the same codes as traditional PT. If a patient has limited PT benefits or has exhausted their PT benefits, this treatment may not be an option. Pain management PT is usually combined with health psychotherapy to create a functional restorationpain managment program. A pain management PT requires specialized training which currently is not provided at most PT training programs. Furthermore, the advantages of the program are diluted when the individual services are not provided in house.
Pain Psychotherapy Referral
The purpose of the pain psychotherapy will be to help the patient re-conceptualize
their pain syndrome, addresss maladaptive thought processes, teach relaxation and pacing techniques, look for psychological barriers to improve such as depression and anxiet, teach stress management skills, and help improve the patient's coping skills.
